Last semester nearly killed me but now I'm enjoying a month off from school so I can focus on things such as updating this blog.

There's no doubt that Band of Horses was one of the most talked about bands of the year. Their album Cease To Begin has been all the buzz on music blogs and in music publications ever since the October 8 release. Their unique mixture of southern country and indie rock combined with Ben Bridwell's haunting and raw voice created a huge fan base that helped sell out their first headlining U.S. tour. I have to admit, I wasn't a fan at first but after listening to the album a couple of times, straight through, I was hooked. The songwriting is flawless and Bridwell's vocals blows me away every time I listen to it. A perfect example of this is their track "No One's Gonna Love You."

Band of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You [MP3]Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com50tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-25654419469648109272007-10-23T13:04:00.000-05:002007-10-24T23:36:02.213-05:00The Voom Blooms

When I heard The Voom Blooms on the KEXP Song of the Day podcast, it was love at first listen. Their upbeat, catchy, and energetic brit pop/post-punk mixture led me to do some further research and here's what I found:

The Voom Blooms are made up of four English lads from Loughborough, George Guildford (guitar/vox), Thom Mackle (drums/vox), Craig Monk (guitars), and Brett Young (bass). Their EP, Nine Ships, was self-released and to my surprise, they have yet to sign to any record label. This hasn't held them back though. They've already made a name for themselves opening for the likes of Babyshambles, Boy Kill Boy, Larrikin Love, and The Paddingtons. After forming in 2005, major publications and radio stations such as Rolling Stone, NME, Radio 1, and BBC took onto their sound, causing their first singles to sell out within a couple days.

I am totally diggin' this band. They are going to be HUGE so please, please, please check them out!

The Voom Blooms - Nine Ships [MP3]
The Voom Blooms - By The Seashore [MP3]
The Voom Blooms - Aeroplanes at 3AM [MP3]

Here's their video for Politics and Cigarettes, my favorite song off of their EP:

Official Website
MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-4154783442227739792007-10-08T20:01:00.000-05:002007-10-24T23:38:28.176-05:00Yacht Club!

Besides being an extremely attractive band, Yacht Club! has been rockin' the music scene in Oklahoma for the past year. Although the music scene in Oklahoma is still growing, Jay Caston (vocals/guitar), Patrick Wetwiska (drums), Scott Harper (bass), and Ian Tennery (keyboards) are starting to make a name for themselves. The catchy riffs and rhythms along with Caston's smooth voice make for a pleasurable combination.

I spoke to Scott Harper of the band and asked him a few questions. Enjoy!

How and when did you guys meet?
We started playing about a year ago. We all knew each other through various degrees of separation in high school. Patrick and I became friends in college and started playing in his basement. Soon enough we brought Jay and Ian on to complete the lineup. Pat and I were very limited in what we could do with two people and it became quite frustrating at times.

What are some of your major influences?
For me personally, I would point at bands like can, my bloody valentine, gang of four, the flaming lips, etc etc etc.. For us, we don't look at bands and say "let's write a song like (insert band here). We're doing our own thing but there are certainly times when I hear a song like future days by can and think "holy shit, how did they achieve this texture?" Little things like that have more influence than an overall sound of a particular band.

What's the songwriting process like for you?
Most of the time I'll come to Jay with ideas and things here and there. We'll sit at our space trying it out in twenty different ways until we like what we hear. The music normally comes before lyrics. It's very important to build melodies around the music, not the music around a melody. Like many bands and for better or worse, we feel vocals are just another instrument in the band. We feel its the finishing texture to songs we write.

What's your outlook on the Oklahoma music scene
The Oklahoma music scene is much better than people think. There are amazing bands out here that very few people know about. I could go on and on about bands like the Evangelicals, Colourmusic, Student Film, and El Paso Hot Button. Contrary to what the average joe would think, they're all making music just as important and moving as a band in LA or New York might make. There are also quite a few venues getting nationally touring acts at a much more frequent rate. Andy (of the Starlight Mints) is doing great things with his venue, the Opolis. My favorite record store, Guestroom Records, recently opened another store which is a good sign. The scene is a bit underestimated. Expect big things from bands here in OK!

What are you guys doing currently that we can look forward to?
Well our first EP entitled "The Third Floor" will be coming our October 12th and we're currently working on new material for the next EP. We're also growing as a band and beginning to gain a better sense of each other's next move which really helps when trying to piece together new material.

Do you plan to tour anytime soon?
Right now we're all finishing up school but we're looking to put together a tour this summer.

Any new bands you guys diggin'?
I've really been digging the new Evangelicals record and the new Animal Collective. Some other favorite new(er) bands are the Joggers, 120 Days, and Black Moth Super Rainbow.

What's makes Yacht Club! different from all of the other indie rock/pop bands out there?
I think one thing that may make us different is our camaraderie. We all genuinely like each other and playing music together. We like to think this comes off in our live show but if not, test us!! We'll hug and kiss until the sun goes down! (joke). But seriously, we have no predisposition to "out-cooling" anyone like you see in too many bands today. We're all approachable in our everyday life and wouldn't change just because we're on stage and you're not. It should never be any different in my opinion.

Like Scott said, the band will be releasing their first EP, "The Third Floor," on October 12. If you're in/around the Norman, OK area, I suggest going to their CD release party at Opolis. Support the the band and pick up a copy or two.

Yacht Club! - According To Plan [MP3]
Yacht Club! - How To Get Away Part 2 [MP3]

MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-90747899686145494972007-10-06T18:06:00.001-05:002008-12-10T03:48:59.094-06:00Klaxons @ The Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEij6s5lqM2y9vxrMjOfug3wVfyI7qVyieR_abI0llfTQqnnIPZqiN6Gkh9HlD6KZdnef7Dmhlizkl2Ps9dZCcW5TCbYark0iC7FoS6E6EKJKySC31wA7_pT1pWUkirc4kzVJkEDTSkheGg/s320/IMG_1128.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118388274780215842" />

Who is that studly, hunk of man above you ask? Why that is none other than James Righton of Klaxons. Thanks to my wonderful internship, I got a chance to attend their show at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, KS last night and it was one of the best shows I've been to in a very long time. The UK natives ran through their entire album, Myths of the Near Future and played an amazing show. With the crowd dancing and the infectious beats of their indie/punk/electronic sound, it was difficult not to join in.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZTeQGS1xur4QZGIVI-YeG2HSaonuVFdXk2-EhKSRF4XZ2mj4TavAGVoMThMpPjtd2vig5FtIfTX85EunDW9II6q97Ke9rm74HODfN0CD8oZmV3MQ6XHgd7KW9XFr5WlXqvEMoG0yY8Ok/s320/IMG_1125.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118388386449365554" />

The show was filled with many highlights including their performances of Golden Skans, Magick, and Atlantis to Interzone, but the most entertaining and memorable moment occured when two crazy/intoxicated Aussies joined the band on stage. This then led to half of the crowd jumping in stage and dancing. And as you can see by the pictures below, this was a very interactive show.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLoeacMjqfQKuKDkY_TUlaaFRusscPGMfr0KK9koB7ifxb7k22nTO4b1vhxrpvlpJkScuTiqGvJIa4sCN01NxDtWyMBoQaDlFY-xPdCynEOaXffXqwsbebeZVgBX7dZ0z6orw6nHpfnXg/s320/IMG_1131.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118390280529943106" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitPbMh91qANjmCRZF2PdsZnJCvQuFoEklAy3SAl3QB3BQubDmyX_akBTd5nB9VD_g3ZVmdicYpEJfgyKCBqU842gSPm3XfOO-MhSA2IOKGfDQBtdMCo_dzm0dl1jqvPAOmLgwA2-RokIE/s320/IMG_1134.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5118390435148765778" />

"Lawrence, KS - You guys are fucking crazier than Germany. The band ended up praising both the venue, the fans, and the city of Lawrence saying "We're going back to England and telling our friends that you haven't played a show until you've been to Lawrence, KS."

After the show, I met the band and we discussed the show and when they were planning on coming back. I asked Jamie to bring their good friend Lily [Allen] (she canceled her show last year) and he said he would but after she sorts the troubles going on in her life. Hopefully Lily sorts things out and the come back soon. They're music mixes 80s pop with today's indie pop and the end result is A Night At The Ritz, their first album with Scratchie/New Line Records, a 14 track album that is pure bliss. It's the kind of album you can listen to without touching the skip button. As I parked my car and checked my teeth for food, the nerves finally got to me. Was I seriously going to hang out with my favorite band? Yeah, yeah I was. When I walked through the door, Jessica and David were sitting on the couch petting Lauren's cat, J.T.T. (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) while Danny and Tom were at the park playing frisbee. We then decided to fill our empty stomachs with delicious Thai food. After dinner, some conversation, and taking a five minute walk around Mass. St, we headed over to the park for some pre-show jamming where we were eaten alive by mosquitos. Here are some pictures from the night:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKiLcXVUAKCcYy-M9Pt3rvj5TtrKGfn6GL880W_bN5tJqsZchMkzp3YOiG3XOAsiBAy_YTbTx4FxXCNucezZC3IsSrTzAlZIoCF7t8tCmJX2fSnOyRbPLbKmYiYVO7eA1qibDBqgYmQNw/s320/IMG_0978.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110224140377118034" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNEZgzHNbsDzr3CAQZ93ifkTjq6JVZXNMFWv-Y49qrtjDFe_fh9h1xJXZ2sg5g2xxLk5T9HcAmMfTrvn6Af5zlhocFhD5R74CUF3HzkwXZyoOosrjMOWffSLXW4qVJjvt5kIAFR1Rm4Ns/s320/IMG_0980.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110224294995940706" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinkS5Qla5QDyKiEvYvx3Y-L_PrAQ7NNQN36q4OYALtNU0DeXMCVtYMurplnhf8-RexAzO_-U_If1G9dZi-FqF7xzeSlx2HdwxczB7yaBh6BCuhn50IOpFN2eNaO1VsGn97mkDi28ZoLk4/s320/IMG_0981.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110223633570977090" />

The show was everything I expected and more. The band's energy radiated throughout the heavily wallpapered venue. Jessica's rendition of the running man dance and David's constant bouncy-ness added to their already lively show. One thing that really impressed me was the amount of talent the band had. It's hard to label each of the band members "the guitarist" or "the drummer" because each member knows how to play all of the instruments. Today I bring you Pinewood Derby, a 3 piece band from the greater Boston area. I first heard of them when they were featured on IndieFeed's podcast. I would have to say that it was love at first listen. Their sound is eclectic and absolutely addictive. With Maryn Jones on vocals, Jack Ludden on guitar and productions, and Josh Staines on bass, this indie pop band is a must hear.

Pinewood Derby - Ivy On Stone [MP3]

Official Website
MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-17208361313153816372007-08-13T00:38:00.001-05:002008-12-10T03:49:00.048-06:00Los Campesinos!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE5bPfLffZpFewSx43iaVrT21C6MQmfUgC_hLMx202gd4T8GttykWBtOnI4H7LMcwNpQk6pA5hi44p-wPJVOtWVhciqdXj4IK7lY1W4Qnn7S4PEBHV_4ZmjEdZm9rknf5WHJkicCDMCHs/s400/Los+Campesinos.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5098055364813813330" />

I hit myself on the head when I heard Los Campesinos! for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Why hadn't I heard about them sooner? This seven piece band from Cardiff, Wales is too good to pass up, so I decided to write about them.

Formed in 2006 while members of the band attended university, they posted You! Me! Dancing! on MySpace and later that year, they were signed to Wichita Records. With all of the internet buzz about (which I obviously didn't hear about...) their first single, they were invited to join Broken Social Scene on tour. You! bursts with so much energy that you may want to get up and start dancing. I've been playing them on repeat for the past few days and I still can't get enough. Check them out!

Los Campesinos! - You! Me! This 9 piece indie pop band from Toronto mix eclectic sounds such as trumpets, violins, trombone, and accordian to create cheery and rowdy kind of indie pop. I'm going to explain to you the relationship I have with Via Audio.

About four years ago, while searching PureVolume.com for some punk/screamo bands (everyone goes through some kind of phase...), I came across a band that completely blew me away. Of course I didn't tell anyone that I had an indie pop band on repeat but they were the first band that I truly "discovered." After a while, I stopped playing them and sadly, I forgot about them too.

A few days ago, I was browsing my IndieFeed podcasts and stumbled upon them once again. I guess great music never lets you forget. 60,000 plays and 5,000 friends later, Via Audio is seriously making a name for themselves. Signed to SideCho records, they're releasing a full-length album entitled, SaySomething on September 25th.

Made up of Danny Molad (drums), Jessica Martins (vocals/guitar), Tom Deis (guitar), and David Lizmi (bass), Via Audio has been making music since 2003 when they were students at Boston's Berklee College of Music. They started playing local shows and were finally discovered at a Spoon show when Martins walked up to drummer, Jim Eno and handed him a CD. Eno took an interest in the band and together, they started recording in his Austin, TX studio.

Words can't even describe how much I love this band. Their music is completely flawless. With their brilliantly written lyrics, infectious melodies, and memorable style, it's easy to see why these Berklee grads are just so damn good. Martins' voice along with Molad, Deis, and Lizmi's make for the perfect combination.

I love each and every band that I feature on this blog but Via Audio will always be one of my favorites so please, when their album is released September 25, GO BUY IT!

Via Audio - Developing Active People [MP3]
Via Audio - Modern Day Saint [MP3]

Official Website
MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-2660671532059453712007-08-07T11:16:00.000-05:002008-12-10T03:49:01.908-06:00The Rewinds<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQ46M0eJOJOs74bZ_GghqERWpH6BJ1LKOgEtigRXcRTMHNnUKTC2E3rs_GOqZolpPb1YqgVUVpde9xbggh6lgp8GsC6gylSORIyCv5GubarGI6YPoLWe18BPkf9iN6pNZGdkCSM-I1gO0/s320/The+Rewinds.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5095994098339313170" />

I've been visiting Alabama for as long as I can remember. When I think of "the Heart of Dixie," the first thought that comes to mind isn't indie rock but The Rewinds, who hail from Birmingham, have completely changed my perspective on music in the South and maybe they'll change your's.

Made up of Michael Shackelford (vocals/guitar), Glenn Drennen (vocals/lead guitar), Chris Markham (bass), and Brooks Marks (drums), The Rewinds have been hard at work combining their love for indie power pop with their Southern roots. They're opened for the likes of Better Than Ezra, Snow Patrol, My Morning Jacket, Eisley, and VHS or Beta. That is I'm From Barcelona, a 29 member band from Sweden. And I thought Belle & Sebastian and Broken Social Scene had a lot of band members. Led by Emanuel Lundgren, this band is known for its use of ecletic instruments such as clarinets, flutes, trumpets, accordians, and kazoos. Their lyrics, however, are extremely simple and refreshing. You're looking at Kyle Riabko, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Kyle began performing at the age of ten and began his professional career during his junior year of high school. He has opened for John Mayer, Robert Randolph, Maroon 5 and blues legend, Buddy Guy. Did I mention that he's only 19? Damn, he makes me feel like I've accomplished nothing in life! Kyle's music is filled with bluesy guitar riffs that can be compared to great blues guitarists B.B. King and Eric Clapton. It's been said that he's in line to become one of this generation's greatest guitar players. Check him out and you can decide for yourself.

Kyle Riabko - Carry On [MP3]

Kyle performing my favorite song Estrogen:

Official Website
MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-86155460595642768182007-07-31T15:04:00.000-05:002008-12-10T03:49:02.590-06:00Tyler James<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp_oy_9Kehszmi2AaIxbVF9Hk0wxK8dB-ttZwsLRnIM54QGXWXHl5cQ1R1d8otUMXaNg6LqD-BA63Uv9Pp8iShP-3LGtIVeI1UZASIPGYosjhYbXEAQHjfq4IhSWEptvUexdqno0uJ4tc/s320/Tyler+James.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5093454595846338002" />

Although Tyler James is 25 years old, he is often mistaken for a teenager. Started in 2000, Datarock began as a four person band but slowly dwindled down to Fredrik Saroea and Ketil Mosnes. It's amazing what these two guys can do on stage. Not only do they fill their shows with breakdancing and b-boy goodness, but they also play the guitar, drums, bass, and spin. Some of their musical influences include Devo and the Talking Heads and it definitely shows. It blows my mind whenever I listen to them. I couldn't believe that four Frenchmen from Versailles could produce such an upbeat and amazing sound. A trace of old school funk and new school beats combines to make for some great music. Their music has been featured in two of Sofia Coppola's (who is also the lead singer's girlfriend) films (Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette). The best thing about their songs are that their "danceable". You can let down your hair and bust a move on the dance floor or you can just chill and listen to them while driving around town with your windows down.

Phoenix - Everything Is Everything [MP3]
Phoenix - Rally [MP3]

Official Website
MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-59332889755618562272007-07-26T20:26:00.000-05:002008-12-10T03:49:04.229-06:00Adam Merrin<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyU39qONO0_cTdmpx24MwGtj7EnF-meqhV_PJSYBo9LbDZgdZ9tprAvXQqP-ddkJv1mJuddA1N_3dGBVqJiAoZI6KxnAhOphn2_mbqxwANC1BgFiepR3QDQoh25hYkvJ7FRm0er0lKueI/s400/Adam+Merrin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091682513814844802" />

Adam Merrin can play your heartstrings like a damn fiddle. After hearing his song Still Alright on the March 22 episode of Grey's Anatomy, I rushed to my computer to do some research. Who was this man that reduced me to tears? Who was this man that provided the perfect music for the storyline of George and Izzy's complicated relationship?

I found out that Adam is also the keyboardist of the upbeat, rock/pop band The 88 which have lent their music to movie soundtracks (You, Me, and Dupree, Failure to Launch) and countless TV shows (The O.C., Laguna Beach, Weeds). Now, that I didn't expect. Adam's message in Still Alright is a far cry from The 88's sound which can usually be heard in the background of a college frat party on MTV but it's still great music and of course, I had to share.

Adam Merrin - Still Alright [MP3]

MySpaceMeganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12603509658229536512noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1071777849396123939.post-41422448761027087412007-07-25T18:28:00.000-05:002008-12-10T03:49:04.574-06:00Oh, Philadelphia<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKpgq0FQShXzQdlIjXKRKOFman7Ce5iQi9vQdRf8BYHl5M3n8zt4GypcVKhmK91XmlRprNrEqET9cXOE6ifgZ3oxlkUH8jYJUh1PJQQiZEZBsPUiB0u9DqO2xpul0w2ctCJ8qV3u26NvQ/s320/FLTRevBlkBar_r1_c1_new.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091282858518017346" />

Philadelphia, PA is known for two things: being the city of brotherly love and cheesesteaks. Music has been pumping through my veins since I was little. Forced to take piano and violin lessons, I rebelled and picked up a guitar. I spend my days and nights searching for up and coming bands or just damn catchy songs that I can play on repeat. I created this blog to spread the music and the love.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNjtHGxHPa05CFCdKWHgpRQhRfWGrca13hgU5vIAy_xxUyyx3C_jxlc3sDXngRvhYmlWZQi6HODluq8RZO4dmHFEyQVUx5CXyZUj4YplnnA5lRSk6QstJFP1KXefaiTwuYABYoI2DjA-s/s400/mus_joshrouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091027316553839922" />

The first of my many rants is about the talented musician/singer/songwriter, Josh Rouse.
After a while, most acoustic/folk performers all start sounding the same.
